JORET CHARLES

In the present work Charles Joret’s aim is not to study the characteristics of plants or to catalogue them by name, but rather follows up the agricultural, industrial, poetic, artistic and pharmacological history of vegetable species known in the various countries of ancient classical times. Volume I deals with Egypt, Chaldea, Assyria, Judea and Phoenicia: plants in Egyptian society, pharaonic flora, plants in Egyptian art and poetry, plants in sacred legends, aromatic plants and their uses. – Plants among the Semites: flora of Asia Minor, Syria, Mesopotamia and Arabia. Plants in semitic myth, art and poetry, pharmacopoeia and drugs. Plants in Chaldean and Hebrew societies. Volume II concerns Iran and India: plants in Iranian and Hindu life, the inhabitants and flora of ancient India, plants in food and industry, in art and poetic description, in religious legends, in medicine and magic.\
