LES TRANSFORMATIONS DE LA LANGUE FRANÇAISE PENDANT LA DEUXIÈME MOITIÉ DU XVIII SIÈCLE (1740-1789)

Réimpression de l'édition de Paris, 1902

GOHIN FERDINAND

The author aims to discover every new element in bath the literary and colloquial French vocabulary during the latter half of the 18th century. In the course of the general intellectual upheaval, the basic principles of classical French were questioned; the language as used by Vaugelas and Racine appeared to a number of writers as inadequate: a new doctrine arose and was gradually reduced to a formula. Excellent chapters deal with doctrines, tendencies, neologisms, metaphorical innovations, borrowings from Old French, from scientific technology and from foreign languages, incorporated into French. Includes systematic glossaries of new words, popular deformations, archaisms and technical terms.
