VERHAEREN EMILE

Émile Verhaeren was born on 21 May 1855 at Saint-Amand, Belgium. Settling in Brussels for his years of probation as a lawyer, he became friend with Rodenbach, Théo van Rysselberghe and James Ensor, and made his début as art critic. His early poems seem influenced by Naturalism. Later, passing through a severe spiritual crisis, he leaves the “decadent” style behind him and produces collections of languorous, feverishly graceful poems. Finally becoming the poet of the blast-furnaces, the docks, the ports and the great cities, he may be said to have earned for the modern world, in its most material and brutal aspect, the right to exist in literature.
