The written accounts of Napoleon’s campaigns seldom emanate from the opposing side. Such is the case of the Memoirs, letters and journal of General Philippe de Grünne, a French-speaking Belgian officer in the Austrian army, who had a front-row seat to the 1809 defeat, which he attributed to courtly intrigues.
