The dévot faction, led by Mathieu de Morgues and Michel de Marillac, was long portrayed as favorable to traditional monarchy, and contrasted with Cardinal Richelieu’s absolutist views. This study argues that they were actually on the absolutists’ side, but opposed to the influence of an all-powerful premier ministre.
