The Wealth of Nations (1776) was clearly inspired by earlier texts published by the French economist Turgot, although Smith never mentions him. This essay confirms that the two men knew each other well, and demonstrates that Smith is also indebted to Cantillon, emphasizing the French roots of political economy.
