This is the first critical edition of La Mesnardière’s Poetics, a treatise on tragedy. In response to modern influences, it calls for strict adherence to Aristotle’s principles, and thus fits into the larger mid-17th-century trend towards strict construction, verisimilitude and decency in the realm of the tragedy.
