Nikolaï Leskov’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (1865) was the subject of several musical and visual adaptations. Each bears witness to the place of female sexuality in Slavic cultures. It is a tale of nature vs. nurture, of an instinctive and impulsive femininity threatening masculinity’s rational order.
