This study highlights the ideological crisis brought about by the infiltration of the Enlightenment’s civic humanism into Greek culture in the late 18th century – a time when post-Ottoman Greek society was experiencing the encroachment of modernity and the rise of a new bourgeoisie inspired by European culture.
