THE PSALMS IN RUSSIAN POETRY

A History

DYKMAN AMINADAV A.

The Psalms in Russian Poetry : A History examines the history of poetic translation of the Hebrew psalms into Russian, as well as the adaptations and imitations of the Psalms in the Russian literary tradition. Beginning with the Rhymed Psalter of Simeon of Polotsk, produced in Moscow in the late seventeenth century, individual chapters examine in detail the poetic psalm translations of major eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century Russian poets, from Mikhail Lomonosov to Timur Kibirov. The Russian Psalms are also compared with Polish, German, French, English and Hebrew traditions of psalm-inspired poetry.
